Red Sox Could Acquire Pitcher For One-Game Playoff

Sep 24, 2014 7:29 PM

The Red Sox could acquire a starting pitcher via trade for a potential one-game playoff with the Rays for the American League Wild Card on Thursday. Boston and Tampa Bay were tied heading into the final day of the regular season on Wednesday. Acquiring a pitcher for the tiebreaker is allowed because the one-game playoff doesn't fall under Major League Baseball's postseason rules. The deal, however, would have to be made before the conclusion of the day on Wednesday.

Marlins To Consider Trading Nolasco

Sep 29, 2014 9:09 PM

The Marlins will give serious thought to trading right-hander Ricky Nolasco this offseason, according to a source that spoke with the team's front office. Florida has a need for starting pitching, but they have reached their limit with Nolasco. He allowed seven runs on Sunday, his final start of the 2011 season. Nolasco's ERA ballooned from 3.72 to 4.67 thanks to a season-ending, eight-start stretch in which he went 1-4 with an 8.18 ERA and 64 hits allowed in 44 innings. "I can't figure him out," manager Jack McKeon said. "He's got too good a stuff to be a 10-12 pitcher. ... He better look in the mirror and see if he can make an adjustment or two. Evidently, the hitters are making adjustments to him."

Capuano Didn't Know Red Sox Wanted Him

Sep 15, 2014 5:43 PM

Mets left-hander Chris Capuano says he didn't know the Red Sox were interested in acquiring him until after the deal was already dead. Earlier this week, Boston approached the Mets about acquiring Capuano for a start this weekend against the Yankees. The Red Sox have experienced both injury and struggle in their starting rotation. Capuano would not have been eligible for Boston's playoff roster. "I guess I don't know how to feel about it," he said. "I didn't hear about it until after my start Thursday in St.Louis. That's when I spoke briefly with (Mets general manager) Sandy Alderson, who said there was just some talk that didn't pan out."

Red Sox Targeted Capuano, Deal Dead

Jun 24, 2014 3:29 PM

The Red Sox made an unsuccessful attempt to acquire left-hander Chris Capuano from the Mets this week, according to a league source. Boston wanted Capuano to start against the Yankees on Sunday in New York. The deal is "dead," according to the source. The Mets treated the inquiry from the Red Sox serious enough that they held back Miguel Batista the first day of the series in St. Louis and did not use him in relief in case he needed to be a spot starter Thursday in place of Capuano.

Royals Will Attempt To Trade For Starter

Oct 17, 2014 6:11 AM

The Royals will attempt to trade for a starting pitcher this winter, but they won't part with a top prospect. Kansas City likes Rangers left-hander C.J. Wilson, but it's hard to imagine them beating out other suitors for the free-agent-to-be. They will not trade Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Danny Duffy or several of the other top prospects who have had some big-league success this year and will probably also not part with Jake Odorizzi or Mike Montgomery.
